The Temptation of the Serpent: Voluntary Servitude in the Western World

We live in a time of existential confusion.

Whoever reads the signs of the times sees no world merely beset by geopolitical tensions or economic crises. It is not about Ukraine, or Iran or Russia, or AI or quantum technology.

The real siege is invisible, creeping, and at the deepest level spiritual. It is a war that is not waged on battlefields but in the meeting halls of the United Nations, in the semantics of our language, and in the inner room of the soul. Whoever digs deeper here recognizes the claw of the old adversary: the Devil, the ‘Ape of God,’ who imitates creation in order to destroy it.

Saint Paul already warned the Ephesians: “For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Eph 6:12). Today we see how these dark powers no longer appear with bellowing violence, but as ‘an angel of light’ (2 Cor 11:14), draped in the white coats of ‘reproductive health care’ and armed with the gavel of bureaucratic consensus. The aim, however, is unchanged: to tear man loose from his Creator.

The Father of Lies and the Semantic War

The first attribute of the devil that Jesus reveals to us is that he is a liar and the father of lies (Jn 8:44). The ‘soft terrorism’ of the Western state begins precisely there: with the violation of language. As the Serpent in Paradise twisted the words of God (“Did God really say…?”), so do modern supranational institutions twist reality.

It is a demonic inversion of values:

  • Freedom is presented as absolute autonomy, a non serviam (“I will not serve”) over against the natural law.
  • Health no longer means healing, but the technical manipulation of the body and the elimination of fertility.
  • Human rights have degenerated into individual desires that the state must satisfy.

This “semantic fraud” is intended to numb the conscience. By calling abortion “termination of pregnancy” and euthanasia “death with dignity,” evil is sold as good. It is the language of Babel, designed to erase the objective truth – which in the end is Christ Himself.

The Great Divider: Diabolos and Fragmentation

The Greek word diabolos literally means ‘the divider’ or ‘he who casts apart.’ The strategy of the modern consensus is one of fundamental division. The UN, once founded with an echo of the natural law, has become an instrument of this division.

The so-called “new ethics” imposed through conferences in Cairo and Beijing puts asunder what God has joined:

  • It separates sexuality from procreation.
  • It separates the mother from the child (through the ‘right’ to abortion).
  • It separates man from his biological identity (through gender ideology).
  • It separates politics from divine morality.

The UN sets itself up here as the guardian of a new, ideological ‘truth.’ It is a counter-church, a mystical body of the Antichrist, that brooks no dissent and pursues a false unity grounded not in Truth but in the lowest common denominator of human weakness.

A Murderer from the Beginning: The War on Creation

“He was a murderer from the beginning,” Christ says of Satan. The hatred of the devil is directed specifically against man, because man is created in the image and likeness of God. The attack on life is therefore not a political policy point, but a theological assault.

Beneath euphemisms like “sustainable development” lies a cold, Malthusian logic that regards the poor as weeds. The wealthy Western elites, driven by a deep fear and pride, are introducing a new eugenics. The child in the womb is eliminated not out of mercy, but as a ritual offering on the altar of our own well-being. It is the modern variant of the worship of Moloch: we sacrifice our children to secure our prosperity and ‘freedom.’ The state that facilitates this transforms itself into Leviathan, a jealous idol that arrogates to itself power over life and death.

The Tempter and Voluntary Servitude

The most insidious tactic of the Tempter, however, is not coercion but seduction. Just as he offered Christ in the desert the kingdoms of the world in exchange for a bow of the knee, so does modern technocracy offer us comfort, security, and pleasure. The price? Our soul and our freedom.

We suffer from “voluntary servitude.” We have traded our sovereignty for mental ready-to-wear: ready-made opinions spoon-fed to us by the mass media. Man is “domesticated,” tamed, reduced to a consumer of desires.

This is the ultimate triumph of Satan: that man kisses his own chains and supposes himself free, while in reality he is locked inside a hedonistic nihilism, severed from God the Father.

Conclusion: The Battle for Eternity

This soft terrorism is more terrifying than physical violence, because it seeks to colonize the soul itself. It is the preparation for the coming of the “Lord of the World,” the humanitarian leader who brings peace without God, as described by Robert Hugh Benson.

The answer cannot, therefore, be merely political. We are caught up in an eschatological drama. The resistance begins with the puncturing of the lie and the refusal to bow to the consensus of death. We must have the courage to restore the names of things and to unmask the demonic inversion.

Against the pride of the Tower of Babel and the cunning of the Serpent stands but one weapon: the humility of the Cross and fidelity to the Truth that is a Person. The state may make laws, and the spirit of the age may compel, but we know that the gates of hell will not prevail against the Church. It is time to resist the Father of Lies, firm in faith.

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)
